Student Internships at JET
General Information
Scope
Student internships are encouraged and promoted by EFDA JET, therefore European students may apply for a tutorship from expert scientists. Working language is English.
Internships are both educational and “hands-on”. Through participation in ongoing activities, interns will improve their understanding of technical and scientific topics, playing a central role in their undergraduate and/or post graduate education. If applicable, the student may arrange academic credits through his/her university.
The internships are however not financially supported by EFDA. Students must therefore rely on other schemes for funding (e.g. grants from Embassies, universities, grants from EURATOM Associations, national funds for higher education, etc.). The arrangement for such support is entirely the responsibility of the applicant.
Eligibility and Duration
Students eligible for an internship are European:
- Undergraduate students
- Unemployed graduates
- PhD students
The typical duration of an internship at EFDA-JET is 3 months.
Workplan
An internship at JET is a structured learning experience scheduled within a specific Workplan and performed under the supervision of a scientist directly involved in EFDA JET activities (Local Tutor). The Workplan shall be relevant to the intern’s academic and professional goals, and to the research activities implemented at EFDA JET.
Based on the proposal submitted with the application, the Workplan for the activities to be implemented during the internship will be decided between the tutor and the student. The Workplan shall also determine the start and end date for the internship.
Student’s duties
At the end of the internship the student will be required to produce a detailed report of his/her activities. The report will be assessed by the local tutor and may be used, if applicable, for the student’s academic career. In case the outcome of the experience is included in a publication, the latter shall follow the procedure for JET publications.
Depending on the type of internship the intern may furthermore be required to keep a journal of activities and experiences. If so requested by his/her tutor at JET, he/she will furthermore attend technical seminars, talks, meetings.
The intern will be subject to the rules and regulations in force at the Culham site and will be required to state his/her agreement to them by signature.
Student’s facilities at JET
An office space with PC and a computer account will be made available to the intern for the duration of his/her stay and access will be granted to the Culham restaurant and library.
