Ripple Experiments

On the 29th January 2007, JET started experiments focussing on toroidal field ripple studies. Due to its high number of thirty-two toroidal field coils, JET has a reasonably smooth magnetic field in the toroidal direction. The ITER design intends to have only eighteen coils which could cause a less uniform toroidal field with bigger ripples. It is therefore very important that experiments are performed to investigate the effect of stronger ripples on plasma characteristics such as plasma confinement.

In these experiments, JET's even-numbered coils are run with a lower current than the coils with an odd number to provoke stronger magnetic ripples. The data from the experiments will be compared with data from the same experiments without ripples.
