Preferences

The Preferences dialog is invoked from the main JETDSP window by selecting 'Preferences' from the 'File' menu.  It allows you to change various parameters for the program, and is split into five sections.

After changing the parameters you need, click the 'Exit' button to apply the changes and close the dialog.  Note that the changes will only be saved for use in future JETDSP sessions if you click the 'Save...' button.

The different preferences panels are explained at the following links:

From this section of the dialog you can:

  • Change the JETNET account details.
The program needs a username and password to read data. You will be prompted for this when you first try to read data.
Alternatively, you can set the details for the current program session here. If you wish to retain these details for future sessions use a .netrc file (see below).
  • Choose whether to request comments in Datatype queries. This is a specific option for the PPF browsing functions (see here)
  • Select deferred signal reading.  If this option is in force then when you define a signal to the main jetdsp table it will be recorded by the table but not actually retrieved.  Instead the left hand column of buttons in the table will show the label 'Read' next to the signal: click on this button to load the data into the program.

  • Choose whether or not to use a netrc file.  This is a text file in a particular format, containing your username and password, thus enabling you to avoid having to type your password every time you run the program.

If you are running the program on a JAC computer, this file should contain the line:
machine ppfhost login uid password xxxxxxxx

(uid is your JETNET userid and xxxxxxxx your JETNET password)

Multiple lines may be present in the same file, and each field should be separated by one space not a tab character.

Please note that .netrc files are a security risk.  On UNIX, prevent others from reading this file with the command:
    chmod og-r .netrc

Note that JETDSP will not use the netrc file unless this option is selected.

  • Change the location of the netrc file. By default, on Unix, this is your home directory
  • The 'Request Comments in DataType queries' field, if not selected, minimizes the amount of network traffic and data recall that is made when using the PPF directory facilities.
